Frederic Marès was an outstanding 20th-century Catalan sculptor, best known for his tireless collecting activity. In fact this is the trait that best defines the museum that bears his name. In 1946 Marès gave his whole collection to the city of Barcelona, which created the museum in the magnificent Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona, in the heart of the Gothic quarter and very close to the Cathedral. The Frederic Marès Museum is, really, a collector’s museum with works that the sculptor acquired throughout his life and which form the most important collection of Hispanic sculpture from the 12th to 19th centuries in all of Spain.
